Description

This document invites you to take a walk from Shipley Bridge to the Avon Dam, and beyond. During your journey you will see strange excrement formations, and knotted polythene bags suspended from small trees and gorse bushes. The locals call these punishment posts; sorting frames used by a vengeful and butcherous bird to prepare for acts of faecal justice. If you choose to walk your dog here, take care to clean up after it makes a mess. You are being watched and you are expected to show respect for the moorland landscape. If you ignore this advice then your car might be subjected to dog muck desecration, or worse still, your beloved pet might get abducted by The Dog Muck Shrike.Letterboxing is an orienteering activity that has its origins on Dartmoor. Following map references and clues, letterboxers search the landscape for weatherproof boxes containing illustrated rubber stamps. Pylon Press Letterboxing Trails reimagine folklore on Dartmoor and its edgelands through the transmission of new and existing stories. To use this trail map, identify and visit the location using the OS or GPS reference, follow the trail to the cache area, and use the clue to help you find the letterbox. Complete your experience by printing the stamp directly on to the map, and leave your name and a comment in the visitors’ book. If you have your own stamp then you can leave a print too.

Our latest collaborative book documents a series of unique visual interpretations of the 'Regeneration' theme, produced by the diverse talents emerging from our Illustration community at Plymouth College of Art.

You will find illustrations that acknowledge the reintroduction of native species to wilderness locations and the resilience of animals that have adapted to hostile environments. You will see studies of servicemen who received pioneering surgery during the First World War and dystopian reinterpretations of symbolic British rituals.

Description: That Little Jackdaw is Mel Brown’s interpretation of ‘The Jackdaw of Rheims’, the tale of a jackdaw who attends a grand banquet, steals the Cardinal’s precious ring, is cursed for his sins and eventually absolved of his crimes and sainted. &#38;nbsp; When we first meet the Jackdaw, he is mischievous, irreverent and very much alive.&#38;nbsp; However, he becomes a broken bird – firstly as a result of the Cardinal’s violent and excessive curse and secondly when the lifting of that curse leaves him pious and devout with his most natural characteristics buried deep.

“Reimagining the poem during a long period of recuperation, the Jackdaw’s fate became my own: a broken bird (my pre-op/post-op self) has a curse lifted (cancer removed and a scar healed) - my love letter to the NHS.”</description>

Description

Philip Trenerry is trying to establish alternative folklore on Dartmoor using a locally associated pastime called ‘Letterboxing’.

‘Focusing on the Hemerdon Mine footpath network, I wanted to make a set of artefacts that put a visual emphasis on starting point as well as goal so I created a folklore trail map to accompany my first letterboxing stamp.

Inspired by public information films like Apaches and Play Safe, I wrote a cautionary narrative that alludes to the fate of two characters who trespassed on the tungsten mine in the 1970s’.

The trail map was hand rendered with coloured pencil and risograph printed in custom colours. The stamp is designed to be printed directly on to the map when found and has been deliberately omitted from the photos.
